Exhibition Overview

For V. Ramesh, an act of devotion seems not only an apt social response to existential tragedies, but also a quest for freedom. As a painter he attempts to find an appropriate language and devise strategies to find an equivalency to the heightened emotional exaltation that could be achieved by a written word or a phrase. His work hints at areas of faith, devotion and transcendence, but it articulates these ideas in an oblique manner, using voices from medieval poetry and images often culled from mythology. The varied modes and ways in which these ideas could be improvised and articulated have led him to explore the myriad ways in which images and the pictorial space could be painted and handled.
