AU Statement on Student Election BDS Referendum

Statement by Matt Bennett, Vice President and Chief Communications Officer

American University remains opposed to boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) proposals toward Israel. BDS actions run counter to AU’s commitment to free expression, our values of inclusion and belonging, and our ability to financially support AU community priorities like student thriving, scholarships, and research.

We are continuing our educational engagement with the community about how the university’s endowment works. This engagement includes how investment decisions are made, the impact of divestment proposals on community members and university resources, the opportunities for community input, and the financial and legal responsibilities of the university and the Board of Trustees.

BDS divestment would negatively affect financial resources available for our students and our academic mission. Divesting from global entities and investments, which may involve companies ranging from Google to Microsoft to Volvo, would limit growth in the university’s endowment. Without growth in our endowment, critical resources for student scholarships, research, and campus improvements like the recent TDR, MGC, and residence hall renovations would be compromised.
