Experts in the justice sector, senior government officials, representatives from international and civil society organizations, members of the private sector, academia, and stakeholders from around the world gathered at the Justice and Rule of Law Forum organized by the World Bank Group (WBG). This forum highlighted the imperative of prioritizing justice and the rule of law as crucial elements of sustainable development. 

The American University Washington College of Law (AUWCL) Center for Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, a global partner of the World Bank Group, was represented at this pivotal event. The Center’s delegation included its Director, Prof. Eduardo Bertoni, the Center’s Coordinator, Gloria Baidoo, and three dedicated students involved in summer work at the Center: Brenna Collette, Katie McGee, and Rachel Bamberger Throughout the forum, discussions centered on the critical role that a strong justice system and adherence to the rule of law play in promoting development. Participants stressed the necessity of making justice systems more accessible to people worldwide, noting that equitable access to justice is the foundation of a vibrant and fair society. Strengthening these mechanisms was deemed critical for maintaining social stability, protecting human rights, and promoting economic growth.

Prof. Bertoni and his team actively engaged in these discussions, they shared experiences and strategies for improving justice systems and ensuring the rule of law is upheld universally. The presence of diverse stakeholders at the forum facilitated a rich exchange of ideas and best practices, highlighting the global nature of these challenges and the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing them.

The forum concluded with a collective acknowledgment of the need to continue strengthening justice systems and the rule of law.

Participants agreed that such efforts are essential not only for safeguarding human rights but also for creating an environment conducive to development and prosperity. By ensuring justice is accessible to all, societies can build a more inclusive and equitable future, where everyone can thrive.
