PIJIP Assists Developing Countries Prepare for Design Law Treaty Negotiations

By  |

PIJIP Director Sean Flynn, Faculty Director Christine Farley and Counsel Andres Izquierdo are providing assistance to developing countries prepare for the negotiation of the World Intellectual Property Organization’s Design Law Treaty (DLT). The diplomatic conference to negotiate the DLT will be held November 11–22, 2024, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. PIJIP published a public video seminar on “What is at Stake in the Design Law Treaty” and a public blog by Professor Sarah Burstein on the requirement in the treaty to permit applications for partial designs with so-called “dotted lines.” PIJIP has held five private workshops with groups of developing countries studying the treaty’s text and will soon publish a working paper by Professors Christine Farley and Thomas Margoni analyzing the treaty’s most debated provisions. These activities are part of PIJIP’s project building a Geneva Center for the study of information justice concerns in multilateral rule making supported by the Arcadia Foundation.
