Effective Fall 2024: Applications for the CRS program will no longer be accepted, as the curriculum is integrated into a reimagined degree beginning in Fall 2025. These changes will not affect current students who will complete the program as expected.

CRS in Action

CRS students are active and engaged global citizens who work to make a positive difference by applying their regional expertise to the international issues most important to them. As a CRS student, practica, study abroad, overseas internships, and even independent research provide you opportunities to gain on the ground experience in your region of focus. Our renowned scholar-practitioners are continuously engaged in field research, informing their teaching and creating opportunities for student-faculty collaboration.

Traveling through Rajasthan

Over the summer, I completed an internship at ActionAid, an NGO in New Delhi. Once the internship was over, I decided to stay a couple of weeks more to travel around a bit. I have been all the way through Rajasthan from Delhi to the border with Pakistan. It has been an amazing experience. India is such a fascinating country full of colors and energy.

Immersive language learning abroad

I was in Moscow this summer thanks to the Susan Carmel Lehrman Award for the study of Russian language, culture, and international relations from the Carmel Institute here at American University. I did a short study abroad program at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, where I took classes on Russian politics and foreign policy, as well as language classes.

Revolutionary History

This is San Fernando de Monte Cristi, which is the capital of Monte Cristi Province, Dominican Republic. It’s located in the northwest region of the country in the coastal lowlands near the border with Haiti. In 1895, it was the site of the signing of the “Manifiesto de Montecristi” by Máximo Gómezand José Martí. He and Máximo Gómez sailed from Monte Cristi to Cuba to fight for Cuban independence.

Comparative and Regional Studies Association

The Comparative and Regional Studies Association (CRSA) was founded at American University in Fall 2013. The purpose of the association is to promote interaction between the various regional foci of CRS through social and scholarly events and to serve as a body to advocate for students associated with the program. Graduate Student Council

The SIS Graduate Student Council (GSC) is committed to providing professional development, advocating for graduate students, and building a school-wide community. GSC provides opportunities to graduate students to plan and participate in social and professional development events, serve on school committees, advocate for themselves and their peers, and generally have their voices heard in the SIS administration. With a team of senators representing the various programs at the School of International Service and a dedicated Executive Council, the GSC strives to be a leader both inside and outside American University.
